Police Officer Loren Courts was shot and killed while responding to a shooting call near the intersection of Joy Road and Marlowe Street at about 7:30 pm.

When Officer Courts and his partner arrived on the scene, the subject immediately began shooting at them, striking Officer Courts while he was still in his patrol car. After being shot, Officer Courts put the car in reverse, and he and his partner jumped out of the car to take cover. His partner tried to save him by applying pressure to his wound, with her back toward the approaching gunman. The subject had come downstairs from the building, pointing the gun at the two officers. Other officers who had arrived on the scene shot and killed the suspect.

Officer Courts was transported to Sinai Grace Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds a short time later.

The man who sold the gun to the suspect has been charged with illegally purchasing a firearm. The shooter had a criminal record and could not buy a weapon legally.

Officer Courts had served with the Detroit Police Department for five years and was assigned to the 2nd precinct. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, and parents. His father had recently retired from the Detroit Police Department.

Deputy Sheriff Ryan Proxmire succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous night while involved in a vehicle pursuit.

A subject who had evaded officers in an earlier vehicle pursuit was spotted at a gas station on 35th Street near Galesburg. As deputies approached him, the man produced a gun and fled in his vehicle, prompting a second pursuit. During the second pursuit, the subject started shooting at the pursuing deputies. One of the rounds struck Deputy Proxmire, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway near the intersection of MN Avenue and 38th Street in Charleston Township.

Unaware that Deputy Proxmire had been wounded, the other deputies continued the pursuit for another 4-1/2 miles until the subject's vehicle became stuck in a field. The man exited his vehicle and again shot at the deputies, who returned fire and killed him.

A passing motorist encountered Deputy Proxmire's vehicle and called 911. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wound the following day.

Deputy Proxmire had served with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office for nine years. He is survived by his wife, four children, and parents.

It is with heavy heart that we report the first death of a United States Police Officer, Captain Jonathan Parnell of the Detroit Police Department, due to the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Not too long earlier, a 38 year old Dispatcher of the Detroit Police Department also succumbed to the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

At this time, 100’s of law enforcement officers have been tested positive for COVID-19, while 1,000+ remain quarantined.

We ask that every citizen pray for the safety of our first responders, medical personnel, and nation during this time.

We remind the public that unlike community members, the concept of "social distancing" does not apply to our first responders, and first responders are now put in some of the most vulnerable positions.
